Gujarat State Profile

Gujarat state came into existence as a separate State on 1st May 1960 in India.

Demography

Gujarat is situated on the west coast of India between 20-6' N to 24-42' N north latitude and 68-10'E to 74-28'E east longitude. It is bounded by the Arabian Sea in the West, by the States of Rajasthan in the North and North-East, by Madhya Pradesh in the East and by Maharashtra in the South and South East.

Gujarat state has an international boundary and has a common border with the Pakistan at the north-western fringe. The two deserts, one north of Kachchh and the other between Kachchh and the mainland Gujarat are saline wastes.

Strategically situated on the West coast having more than 1600 Kms. For the purpose of administration, Gujarat State at present comprises of 25 districts, sub-divided into 226 talukas, having 18618 villages and 242 towns. Gujarat has geographical area of 1.96 lakh sq.kms. And accounts for 6.19 percent of the total area of the country.

Infrastructure

Gujarat state have strategically developed very efficient and cost affective infrastructure which boost states industrial growth.

Transport & Communication

Gujarat state has developed 74031 km road at the end of March, 2002. Out of 74031 km, a surfaced road was 70688 km (95.48 per cent) at the end of March, 2002. The total road length available per 100 sq.km worked out to 37.77 km.

At the end of March 2003 the total no. of registered vehicles were 65.08 Lakh in the state and vehicle density i.e. no. of vehicles per sq.km worked out to 33.

At the end of March, 2003, the total no. of telephones per 100 populations in the State worked out to 5.89.

Electricity

The total installed capacities for the state including central sector project has increased to 8651 MW (Derated 8615 MW) at the end of the year 2001-02. The generation of Electricity in the state including the generation of Ahmedabad Electricity Company, private sector and central sector share was 50069 MKWH in 2001-02. The total consumption of electricity of GEB system and A.E.Co was 34797 MU's during the year 2001-02. The per capita consumption of electricity during the year 2001-02 was 963 units. All the 17940 feasible villages out of total 18028 (as per 1991 census) villages in the state have been electrified.

Ports

The State of Gujarat, located on the West Coast of India which has 1600 km long coastline, representing a third of the nation's water front. Gujarat is strategically located to service the vast north and central Indian hinterland. The Gujarat State has 40 minor and intermediate ports geographically dispersed across South Gujarat (13 ports), Saurashtra (23 ports) and Kachchh region (4 ports). One Major Port of Kandla is under the administrative control of the Central Government.

During the 2002-2003, the total cargo handled by major port of Kandla was 406.33 lakh tonne and intermediate and minor ports of Gujarat handled a total cargo of 841.24 Lakh tonne respectively.

Gujarat's Industrial profile

Gujarat state is strategically situated on the West coast having more than 1600 Km's. and is the longest among all States of country. coastline and one of the best all weather ports of India catering to a vast hinterland and accessing West Asian and African markets, Gujarat has always been a front runner in India's industrial contribution, Gujarat produces 91% Soda Ash, 90% Dyes, 70% Salt, 56% Vat Dyes, 31% Cotton Textiles, 25% Viscose Filament Yarn and 22% Phosphoric & Nitrogenous Fertilizers and almost 35% of Pharmaceuticals produced in India. Besides Gujarat's Net State Domestic Product (SDP) has increased to 4.7%, as compared to India's coverage of 2%.

With more than 18,000 registered factories employing over 800,000 people, the State has diversified and strong industrial base as Textiles, Dyes and Chemicals, Fertilizers, Petrochemicals / Petroleum refining, Pharmaceuticals, Food Processing, Cement, Steel Engineering, Automobiles etc. One of the largest petroleum refineries in Jamnagar, in the State, is expected to take off soon. That is why Gujarat, with projected investment of more than Rs.400, 000 million in pipeline, is poised to become the most preferred investment destination of India.
